Audax's Principal Discusses Laneway Developments in Metro
November 2014 - Laneways, or spaces in between buildings, offer developers and designers unique opportunities to enhance not only the everyday pedestrian experience but also the public realm of a city. However, not all laneways are configured the same, and each requires its own a unique approach. Audax has designed a number of projects in Toronto that have reanimated laneways in different ways. Examples include the Marie Cluthe building in Yorkville, Shops of Summerhill in Rosedale, the laneway entrance to The Chase and The Chase Fish & Oyster, and most notably the residential condominium project, Lanehouse on Bartlett. Gianpiero Pugliese, principal of Audax says the idea of entering a building through a laneway is very appealing as it inspires feelings of romance and discovery, as if you are uncovering something new. While not all laneways are suited for development, Pugliese believes that as land in Toronto becomes scarcer, it will be worth the extra effort to investigate options.
