King West Office Tower
Audax was approached to design a fifteen-story office building in the heart of one of Toronto’s most vibrant neighborhoods, King Street West. With the patchwork of new development applications being proposed for the neighborhood, Audax has taken a measured approach, creating a design that doesn’t try to compete with the surrounding context, but instead creates a harmonious relationship with it. The architectural language is derived from the two-story heritage building upon which the new office building sits. This is exemplified by using the rhythm of the pilasters on the heritage façade to set up the structural rhythm for the new building. The middle body of the building transitions from the heritage base with a more contemporary brick treatment. The upper stories of the building are designed with expansive glazing and large overhanging canopies to provide shade while allowing for optimal natural light to enter the interior office spaces.
